How to Submit

General Contestants will email their submissions to [email protected].

High School Contestants will submit to [email protected].

Calling all thinkers, lovers, and malcontents.

Screens and the Ego Literary Magazine provides you the opportunity to be recognized and published for your thoughts about or related to the emotional and psychological condition of modern America. Interpret that as you will. We are accepting rolling Poetry, Fiction, Creative Nonfiction or anything else. Any submission deemed awesome will be published in our online magazine. One piece per month will be deemed the Contest Winner. Honorary Mentions will be listed by name, and we’d be happy to hyperlink your portfolio or social media.

The purpose of this magazine is to foster a community of people respectfully discussing contemporary problems, so applicants must read as well as write. You must read and comment on two pieces published on the Magazine. You must read two of the three publically available chapters from Screens and the Ego and write reactions to them.

Submissions are prioritized if they thematically or creatively engage one of the following prompts as loosely or explicitly as your heart takes you:

  • Depict a moment when modern American society felt empty. When? Why? Was there a moment it changed?
  • Depict a moment when modern American society felt whole. When? Why? Was there a moment it changed?
  • In some way, answer the question, “What distinguishes Generation Z?”
  • How has the world changed in your lifetime?
  • Open submission on any topic you feel passionate about.

Content is especially prioritized if it relates to mental health, religion, God, godlessness, soul, psychology, political polarization, culture clash, divorce, Trumpism, Leftism, conservatism, liberalism, multiculturalism, how the world used to be, and the digital native experience. Submitting is free. The book Screens and the Ego does not need to be purchased for the sake of this contest because three  sample chapters are publically available on the home page and, if you scroll down, on this page.

A complete submission is an email with the following attachments:

  • Your Creative Submission (with the file name: YourName_CreativeSubmission)
    • 50-5000 words
  • Your reactions to two published pieces on the Literary Magazine and two of the publically available chapters from the book Screens and the Ego, available in PDF below. All reactions need to be submitted as a word document (with the file name: YourName_Reactions).
    • Your reactions will be posted if your Creative Submission is accepted.
    • 100 – 1000 words
  • If you are a high school student, attach a photo of your high school ID.

NOTE: While you are under no obligation to like or agree with the work you read, the quality of your engagement will affect if your Creative Submission is published.

Abusive comments will disqualify you. Any questions can be emailed to [email protected]

There are four possible outcomes:
